Broken Minds: Moodboard Analysis

1) Element and fear on the protagonists face. (Still taken from Disturbia) Use of phallic weapon - garden trimmers.

2) Prosthetic makeup / fake blood on the character. Connotes madness and the fact he's losing his mind slowly, almost insanity portrayed.

3) Evil/ Darkly shown Police officer. - Our main protagonist is a police officer and we can use the dark shades/ silhouettes (chiaroscuro) to effect on our character.

4) Red eye/ evil through the character's eye. Desperation portrayed on his face, we want our character to look and 'feel' the same, almost as if he's lost all hope.

5)   Suspended character - ghost/paranormal/abnormal goings on. We want our own character to have been 'possessed' by whatever is controlling him, so we could element some of these in our own trailer.

6) Flashback / what we think is going on and what's not. For example, the screenshot- she thinks she is biting into an apple, but we see a light-bulb, which then changes back to an apple. Playing with the audience's mind and creating a restricted narrative style.

7) Red devil / evil haunting type character, that keeps in both our minds and that of the mind of our protagonist. We could take clear motivational ideas from this 'type' of villain.

8) Paranormal / haunting ghost that follows and creeps on our protagonist.

Evil Dead (2013 Red Band Trailer)

Evil Dead (Red Band 2013 Trailer)

What happens in the trailer?
Remake of the original Evil Dead film, this trailer is Red-Band(ed) meaning it’s more violent and aimed at a more adult audience. It will only get played in R- rated cinemas in the United States, and 15/18 screened films in the UK. The narrative starts off with ‘Mia’ the main protagonist and ultimately, the female survivor (last girl) who has been taken to this secluded cabin, miles away from civilisation by her friends- adamant to get her off the drugs and alcohol she is controlled by. Little do they know, that whilst searching the surrounding swamps, and investigating the ruins of a time long ago- they unleash a demon, the previous host of the ‘Evil Dead’. Mia’s friends, unsure whether she’s just going crazy because of the withdrawal or whether there’s something really going on, up until members of the group start dying. Scenes involving a possessed Mia violently killing her friends, any way possible through the use of nail guns, chainsaws and shotguns really illustrate the ‘horror’ element of the trailer. Whilst only 2-3 minutes in length, we already know the main plot and narrative idea. The trailer ends rather abruptly with Mia’s brother saying we either have to kill her or escape to survive. Whilst generally ‘scary’ in most senses, there are both a few hide-behind your hands moments, and a few almost silly mentions.
Positive things about the trailer?
Music/Soundtrack
Establishes Plot
Lots of blood and gore - delivering on its promise
Collision cutting throughout (quick-slow)
SFX to accompany the trailer
Inter-titles
Negative things about the trailer?
Weird kissing/ cutting tongue in half scene at were frankly unnecessary
Blood vomit scene - too long
Ruins the plot with the excessive amount of action scenes.
Trailer’s Average Score
8.6 – Genuinely scary, collision cutting worked great, good music and editing.

Toxic Avengers Film Trailer Review

Toxic Avengers (Comedy Horror 1985)

What happened in the trailer?

Although comically, we see the 'birth' of the Toxic Avenger, after he goes from being consistently bullied about his weight, to falling into a van full of toxic waste. Through his almighty transformation, he becomes the Toxic Avenger. We (the audience) are hit with multiple taglines about said Avenger, and everything from car chases and crashes to insane fight scenes, with our hero fighting the evil that used to typecast him.

Positive things about the trailer?

Clearly gets across the title of the film through the use of the voiceover
Delivers on it's promise of being a silly and funny comedy 'horror'
Negative things about the trailer?

     Trailer length was too long
Voiceover especially repeating became too silly,
bordering on almost awful,
Most of the 'comedy' was unfunny
Not enough horror in the trailer.

Average Trailer Score

3.5 - Purely down to some of the silly elements in the trailer, ultimately bringing down the total score for the trailer.

Cloverfield Film Trailer Review

What happened in the trailer?

In the trailer, we see the majority of the main characters in the film. They're celebrating, it's a perfect night in New York when they're suddenly interrupted by what appears to be a 'earthquake'. Panic erupts, we're forced from a 3rd person outlook to a shaky handheld first person. Excitement and fear rushes through us we cut to a short of the TV message playing out. Lights dip and we're on the rooftop, witnessing a huge fireball explode into the sky from downtown. People rush outside, it's chaos with people running through their lives, screaming away from the terror that they've seen. We (the camera) rushes away, only to be interrupted by a flying statue of liberty head, and the trailer cuts.

Positive points about the trailer?

  • Wide range of shot types
  • Collision Cutting between the party atmosphere and the panic on the streets.
  • Explosion/ Noise connoting fear and panic
  • Interesting plot - we never see the 'monster' making it ideal for the target audience.

Negative points about the trailer?

  • Statue of liberty head not up to scale
  • Too much handheld camera could turn away the audience?
  • No clear definition what type of horror this is (Action, Psychological etc)
Trailer's average score amongst the class.

Cloverfield received an average score of 8 out of 10. It received this mark purely down to the ranging use of cinematography in the trailer, and the uneasy feeling received by the monster/plot.
